Only An Orphan Girl, A Must See On the Main Street Stage

I was honored to be invited to attend “Media Night” at the Emmetsburg Main Street Community Theater’s production of Only An Orphan Girl.  It was an amazing play and just like a movie critic, I give it 2 thumbs up!

This melodrama is well acted, perfectly cast and holds the attention of the audience all the way through.  Audience participation is highly encouraged as we were given a bag of peanuts to throw at the villain every time he walks onto the stage and the two narrators hold up signs for applause, sigh, whistle, cheer, and boo/hiss for certain characters.

About Only An Orphan Girl

As in all melodramas, it involves the Villian, Arthur Rutherford, the Heroine, Nellie, the hero, Dick Perkins and a small cast of other actors.  (They are listed at the bottom of the post)

Arthur Rutherford is looking for his long, lost niece, Nellie who has been adopted by the Perkins.  As a result of a series of unfortunate events the hard working family ends up struggling to pay the mortgage on the farm.

Due to their circumstances Dick Perkins, the hero is bound and determined to make everything right for the girl he loves, Nellie and his family.

Of all of the expressions and faces of Nellie, the one shown above is my favorite.

Dick is tempted by the advances of Mrs Rutherford who is plotting against the family with her husband for her own financial gain.

Finally, things start to fall apart for the villain and his wife…of course they resort to threats and dynamite.
