Time For A Cool Change – How To Update An Old Clock

I am super excited today.  This is my second time participating in the Silhouette Challenge.  Last month I made these awesome winter throw pillows.  Even though there is a tree on one of them I still have them out and I love looking at them everyday.  This time I am using a clock as my project.

This month our theme is “Make Something Old New Again”.  I love this and it is right up my alley.  It is my theme all of the time.

I found a hideous clock at the thrift store. It is fun to update an old clock and make it look spectacular!

Updating An Old Clock

I found this clock at our local thrift store.  It was hanging on the wall but wasn’t working of course.  It has a paper front but it was really secure and I knew I could paint it.

This is what it looked like.

I apologize if you like it but I thought it was quite hideous!  But I could also see beyond the ugly!

Clock Mechanism

The Makover

This clock had the mechanism in it but it wasn’t working so I removed it.  I already had a new mechanism in my craft stash but wanted to keep the hands from the clock because they were a better size.

I wanted to paint the clock face black to match the outside wood piece.  This is where the black spray paint/primer comes in.  I sprayed the entire thing.  And I painted the hands black too.

When it was dry I went over it with the white spray paint/primer.  It ended up being a nice smooth surface for my stencil.

The stencil is the part where the Silhouette Cameo machine comes in.  I created the numbers and the lettering in the Silhouette software program.  This is what my screen looked like after I was done designing.

I used the cut settings for vinyl.  When it was cut I had created my clock face stencil.

Now came the hard part.  I needed to lay the stencil onto the clock face.  This took some patience and some time but I got it done.

Once the stencil was on I used the stencil brush and very small amounts of black acrylic paint to create the design.

When I removed the stencil there were some areas to touch up.  I used white acrylic paint but it didn’t match perfectly with the white spray paint and it wasn’t as smooth.  I didn’t worry about it though because I knew with the sanding and the gel it would blend in and be fine.  And it was!

You can see the nice sanding that makes it look old.  And the black paint is peeking out from below.

I love the way it turned out.   I can’t wait to find another clock and update it as well.

If you like it please share.  And be sure to check out and share all of the other’s Silhouette projects as well.

Great job! I took an old clock like this, took it apart, used wallpaper on the face, and stenciled the numbers. It was a gift for a friend and she absolutely loved it as it went perfectly with her new kitchen remodel.

This is so neat! I would've passed by that old clock at the thrift store and never given it a second glance. I love how you gave it a new lease on life :)

Thanks so much Emily! It was hanging on the wall and something about it just struck me. I wish it was a lot bigger but I love how it turned out!
