Tinted Mason Jar Glasses

I have always loved the look of these painted mason jar glasses and have wanted to try them.  To be honest I was a little intimidated by them so I just kept posting pretty pictures of them on Pinterest.  I found a really great post with at tutorial from Simply {Darr}ling and I thought…I can do this.

Peggy and I were perusing the Goodwill store last week and she spotted these.  I loved the little area in the middle for a label or something.

They were only $1 each so I got them.  She managed to find a set of four.  I had just read the blog post with the tutorial from Kendra at Simply {Darr}ling so I got them.

I wanted to try to get colors that are close to the accent colors in my kitchen so I googled how to mix the food coloring to achieve my brown, yellow, teal and green.  After finishing this project I found tons of different shades of food coloring at Hobby Lobby.  I think next time I will try those and see what happens.

I think they turned out a little bright but I do like them .  My favorites are the teal and the brown.

So this is what I used:

mod podge

water

food coloring

craft sticks

cookie sheet

parchment paper or waxed paper

Chalkboard Paint for Glass

I used 1 tablespoon of mod podge, 1 teaspoon of water and 9 drops of food coloring just as Kendra did in her tutorial.  (Mix and match to get the color you want)  To get that shade of green I used 6 green drops and 3 yellow drops.  The teal was 5 blue and 4 green drops and the brown was acheived with 3 drops red, 3 drops, blue and 3 drops yellow.

I used an old spatula to mix the ingredients right in the glass.  Be sure to make sure it is mixed good and none of the white mod podge is still showing.

When it is mixed up you are ready to roll the glass around to get the color all over the inside.

When the inside is fully “painted” set the glass upside down a couple of craft sticks on the parchment/waxed paper and let the extra drain out.

This took a while and I still should have waited longer.  I think I was a little impatient.

Then turn them right side up on a cookie sheet and bake in a 200 degree oven until the mixture is totally died.  In Kendra’s tutorial she said you will know when it is ready.  Well, I think I was impatient again because I can still see some dark areas at the bottom of the glass where I just don’t think it was all dry.  This goes back to letting it drain better too.

I wanted to add some chalkboard paint in the label area so I picked up some chalkboard paint for glass.

I brushed on 4 thin coats letting it dry completely in between each of the coats.  I really love how they turned out and

I can’t wait til I decide what will go in them so I can write it on the glass.  I am sure I will be using them on my new desk when we get the dining room office space done.

I placed them on the fabric that I would like to use in the kitchen to line some organizational boxes and they are not a perfect match by any means but I don’t think they look terrible with it.  The dining room is next to the kitchen and I want to pull the same colors in.  It think these are going to look great on my desk.

What do you think?  Have you ever tried this technique of tinting glass?  I would love to know what you think.
